Abstract

A high workload among physicians and nurses in emergency departments may affect their mental health, including increasing the risk of depression. High service demands, the management of critically ill patients, and shift-work systems can cause physical and psychological stress. This study aimed to determine the relationship between workload and depression levels among physicians and nurses in the Emergency Departments of RSPUR and Teungku Fakinah Hospital. This study employed an observational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 45 respondents selected using a total sampling technique, comprising 18 physicians and nurses from RSPUR and 27 from Teungku Fakinah Hospital. Data were analyzed using the Chi-Square test with a 95% confidence level (α = 0.05). The results showed that the majority of physicians and nurses at RSPUR had a moderate workload, accounting for 14 respondents (77.8%), and a normal level of depression, accounting for 13 respondents (72.2%). At Teungku Fakinah Hospital, most respondents had a moderate workload, with 15 respondents (55.6%), while depression levels were predominantly classified as normal and moderate, with 10 respondents (37.0%) in each category. The Chi-Square test showed no significant relationship between workload and depression levels among physicians and nurses at RSPUR (p = 0.267). In contrast, a significant relationship was found between workload and depression levels among physicians and nurses at Teungku Fakinah Hospital (p = 0.001). In conclusion, the relationship between workload and depression levels differed between the two hospitals. Workload was not significantly associated with depression levels among physicians and nurses at RSPUR, whereas a significant association was found at Teungku Fakinah Hospital.
