Abstract

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a progressive condition that requires long-term renal replacement therapy, one of which is hemodialysis, and it has a significant impact on patients’ physical, psychological, social, and economic conditions. The continuous and routine nature of hemodialysis often presents various challenges that affect patients’ quality of life. This study aimed to explore the challenges and hopes of patients with CKD undergoing long-term hemodialysis therapy. This study employed a qualitative design with a phenomenological approach. The study population consisted of patients with CKD undergoing hemodialysis at RSUD Dr. Moewardi Surakarta. The sample included 12 patients with CKD, five family members, and one healthcare professional, selected using purposive sampling. The research variables focused on the challenges and hopes experienced by patients during long-term hemodialysis therapy. Data were collected through in-depth interviews using semi-structured interview guidelines and were analyzed using content analysis. The results revealed that patients experienced multidimensional challenges, including physical challenges such as fatigue and post-dialysis symptoms; psychological challenges such as anxiety and treatment-related burnout; social challenges including stigma and limited social support; economic challenges related to job loss and financial burden; and logistical challenges such as travel distance and time constraints. On the other hand, patients expressed hopes of being able to return to daily activities, resume social roles, maintain family togetherness, and improve their quality of life. In conclusion, understanding the challenges and hopes of patients with CKD undergoing long-term hemodialysis is essential to support a holistic and sustainable care approach aimed at improving patients’ quality of life.
