Abstract

This study aims to identify potential hazards, analyze the level of occupational accident risks, and provide risk control recommendations for plastic bottle press machine operators at CV Barokah Kayane using the quantitative Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA) method. This research employed a quantitative descriptive approach, with data collected through field observations, interviews, documentation, and risk assessments based on likelihood and severity parameters. Risk values were calculated to classify risks into low, medium, and high categories. The results identified five major hazards in the plastic bottle pressing process. Two work activities were classified as high risk, namely feeding plastic bottles into the press machine due to the risk of hand entrapment and arranging compressed plastic bales due to the risk of being struck by heavy bales. Three other activities were categorized as medium risk, including the use of cutters that may cause lacerations, liquid spills from plastic bottles that may result in slips, and machine noise that may lead to hearing impairment. Risk control recommendations were developed based on the hierarchy of controls, including the preparation and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), improvements in work methods, proper manual lifting techniques, routine workplace housekeeping, and increased supervision of operator compliance. The study concludes that the quantitative HIRA method effectively identifies and prioritizes occupational accident risks and can serve as a basis for developing risk control programs to improve occupational safety and health at CV Barokah Kayane.
