Abstract

Hypertension is a chronic condition where management relies heavily on the patient's understanding of their own health status. Low health literacy can hinder patients from adhering to treatment recommendations and adopting healthy lifestyle behaviors, ultimately affecting their overall quality of life. This study aimed to examine the relationship between health literacy and quality of life among hypertensive patients in the service area of a community health center in Jambi City. This quantitative, cross-sectional study involved 73 hypertensive patients selected via simple random sampling. Data were collected using validated quality of life and health literacy questionnaires and subsequently analyzed using univariate and bivariate methods. The results showed that the majority of respondents had low health literacy (67.1%) and poor quality of life (65.8%). Among the 49 respondents with low health literacy, 81.6% also experienced poor quality of life; the chi-square test yielded a p-value of 0.000 (< 0.05), confirming a significant association between the two variables. These findings indicate that the ability of hypertensive patients to access, understand, and apply health information plays a crucial role in shaping their quality of life, highlighting the need for accessible and sustainable health education programs at the primary healthcare level.
