Abstract

Appendicitis is an acute or chronic inflammatory process affecting the vermiform appendix, caused by an obstruction within the appendiceal lumen. Nursing issues associated with post-appendectomy cases include acute pain, risk of infection, and risk of hypovolemia. Nursing care for a post-appendectomy patient—focusing primarily on acute pain—was administered at the Kediri Regency Regional General Hospital (RSUD) over a three-day period in November 2023, utilizing the nursing process. Assessment findings revealed acute pain associated with a physical injury agent, evidenced by the patient’s complaints of pain and visible grimacing. Interventions included controlling environmental factors that exacerbate pain (such as limiting visitors and regulating room temperature), facilitating rest and sleep (e.g., changing bed linens if the patient felt uncomfortable), explaining the causes and triggers of the pain, employing non-pharmacological techniques (such as deep breathing exercises and finger-holding techniques), and collaborating on medication administration (Ketorolac 1g three times daily, Ceftriaxone 1g twice daily, and Ranitidine 1g twice daily). Evaluation of the nursing care indicated a reduction in the acute pain scale for the patient (An. S), with the pain score dropping from 4 to 3. The care provided aims to encourage the patient and their family to maintain environmental cleanliness and participate in surgical wound care to prevent pain recurrence, ensuring the family is capable of managing the wound after the patient is discharged.
