Abstract

Refractive errors are among the most common causes of visual impairment and remain a significant public health problem affecting individuals of all age groups. These conditions include myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism, which may reduce visual acuity and adversely affect daily activities and quality of life if left undetected and untreated.

This study aimed to describe the characteristics of patients with refractive errors at the Ophthalmology Clinic of Pertamedika Ummi Rosnati General Hospital based on age, sex, type of refractive error, and the results of visual acuity examinations of the left eye (Oculus Sinistra, OS) and the right eye (Oculus Dextra, OD). This study employed a descriptive quantitative design using secondary data obtained from patients’ medical records available in the Hospital Management Information System (SIMRS). The study population consisted of 1,186 patients diagnosed with refractive errors during the period of November 2025 to April 2026. A total of 92 respondents were selected using the simple random sampling technique. Data were analyzed using univariate analysis and presented as frequency distributions and percentages.

The results showed that the largest age group was late elderly (56–65 years), accounting for 23 respondents (25.0%). The majority of patients were female, comprising 64 respondents (69.6%), while 28 respondents (30.4%) were male. Astigmatism was the most common type of refractive error, affecting 51 respondents (55.4%). Based on visual acuity examination, most patients had mild visual impairment, with 50 respondents (54.3%) in the left eye (OS) and 48 respondents (52.2%) in the right eye (OD). Overall, patients with refractive errors in this study were predominantly late elderly females, with astigmatism as the most common refractive error and mild visual impairment as the most frequent visual acuity finding. These findings are expected to contribute to improving early detection strategies and enhancing eye health services.
