Abstract

Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession that interacts directly with patients; thus, professional competence encompasses not only clinical skills, but also integrity, responsibility, communication, and ethical behavior. This study aims to identify the level of professional ethics understanding among Physiotherapy students at Universitas Widya Husada Semarang (UWHS) before and after attending a professional ethics workshop, analyze changes in their understanding, and examine the relationship between semester levels and ethics understanding categories. This quantitative research utilized a pre-experimental one group pretest-posttest design with purposive sampling involving 100 students from semesters 4–8. The measurement instrument was a 20-item questionnaire on a 1–4 Likert scale covering four ethical domains. The intervention consisted of a 6-hour structured professional ethics workshop. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate methods, specifically the Wilcoxon signed-rank test and the Chi-Square test. The results showed a significant increase in the mean ethics understanding score from 65.3% (SD 9.8) at pre-test to 83.7% (SD 7.6) at post-test, with the proportion of students in the good category rising from 18.0% to 70.0% (p < 0.001). All ethical domains improved, with the peer responsibility domain showing the highest increase of 22.2%. However, no statistically significant relationship was found between semester level and ethics understanding category (p = 0.469). In conclusion, a active-learning-based professional ethics workshop is effective in significantly enhancing physiotherapy students' understanding of professional ethics, particularly regarding peer relations
