Abstract

Bali has long been recognized as one of the world’s most renowned tourist destinations, offering a unique combination of natural beauty, rich culture, and engaging tourism experiences. However, emerging challenges related to tourists’ health have also become a concern during visits to Bali, one of which is a phenomenon commonly referred to as “Bali Belly.” Based on this phenomenon, the present study aims to explore the dynamics of international tourists’ experiences related to Bali Belly during their visit to Bali. This study employed a qualitative research method, with interviews used as the primary data collection technique, conducted in several areas in Bali, including Badung and Denpasar. The collected data were analyzed using thematic analysis, resulting in the identification of four major themes: tourists’ perceptions of Bali Belly, symptoms experienced due to Bali Belly, factors influencing the occurrence of Bali Belly, and responses and emotional reactions after experiencing Bali Belly. The findings indicate that most tourists do not perceive Bali Belly as a serious health threat, but rather as a common digestive disturbance that may occur in various countries. Factors such as food hygiene, types of food consumed, environmental conditions, as well as differences in climate and bodily adaptation were found to influence tourists’ experiences of Bali Belly. In conclusion, Bali Belly is generally regarded as a normal part of the travel experience that does not diminish Bali’s positive image as a tourist destination.
